AT&T continues colossal investment rampage to boost networks
Texas-headquartered multinational conglomerate holding company AT&T seems to be on the verge of a massive investment spree. The firm, since 2016, has been emptying its coffers toward enhancing wireless and wired networks across the North American continent, aimed toward boosting coverage, performance, speed, and reliability for residential and commercial establishments.
AT&T’s endeavor toward network upgradation most certainly does not come as a surprise. The world’s largest telecommunications company has been consistently upping its ante to remain at the forefront of communications technology. Recently for example, AT&T forged an alliance with Uber to explore how 5G and LTE together can better next-gen eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles) and cargo drones using its industry-leading 5G expertise with Uber’s air mobility business unit, Elevate.
But what AT&T can be most remembered for this June, is the mammoth number of investments it has made throughout the U.S. and Canada since the last three years, to accelerate the pace of its networks. Perhaps it is on this account that the company landed on the list of the ‘World's Most Admired’ companies on Fortune, for the 5th consecutive year. Not surprisingly, AT&T has also been able to chronicle its name on the Global Top 50 list for the 6th successive year – an amazing force to reckon with.
As per the Q1 2019 results from tests – taken with Speedtest® and evaluated by Ookla®.2, AT&T's wireless network covers over 99% of Americans and is now the fastest wireless network in the nation. Back in 2018, the company upgraded 812 wireless networks in Iowa and added new additional network capacity, enhanced back haul, and cell sites. It has invested USD 100 million over 2016-2028 to boost Iowa networks.
Some of AT&T’s extensive investments during 2016-2018 are enlisted below:
- USD 60 million to boost local networks in South Dakota
- USD 425 million to boost local networks in Nevada
- USD 350 million to boost local networks in Puerto Rico
- USD 375 million to boost local networks in Phoenix
- USD 250 million to boost local networks in Alaska
- USD 700 million to boost local networks in Wisconsin
- USD 200 million to boost local networks in New Mexico
- USD 3.2 billion to boost local networks in Florida
- USD 5.4 billion to boost local networks in Georgia
AT&T’s investment strategy, no doubt, for wired and wireless network upgrades had been on an upward spiral since the last three years. How exactly these growth tactics help the company further consolidate its position in the telecom space is yet to be seen.
