Luxury automaker Audi planning to jump on the pickup truck bandwagon
- Speculations have it that a fully electric variant of the pickup truck is also likely to be built.
- Audi might borrow the architecture of Volkwagen Amarok for its pickup trucks.
Audi AG is preparing to join the pickup trucks bandwagon, according to CEO Markus Duesmann. The German automotive is exploring its options and might come up with something soon, taking on some popular products such as Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
It appears that Audi refuses to stay behind in the fast-growing pickup truck segment and aims to create a new niche by launching premium pickup trucks, with a concept version scheduled to be unveiled soon. Speculations have it that a fully electric variant of the pickup truck is also likely to be built since the automaker giant intends to go all-electric in near future.
However, it is highly unlikely for Audi to invest in a brand-new platform as the company is already spending a huge chunk of its investments towards advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and electrification. It instead plans to borrow the architecture of Volkwagen Amarok for its pickup trucks.
Moreover, the Audi pickup truck is expected to come up with high-end technologies and a host of luxurious materials. The German automotive giant could share the turbodiesel V6 engine and other powertrain options with Volkswagen Amarok.
The Volkswagen Group has already teamed up with Ford Motors Company to develop the underpinning for the new Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok. The same platform would be used to underpin the Audi pickup truck as well.
It is worth mentioning that the pickup truck segment has become highly popular across the globe, especially in North America. In the recent past, the popularity of this segment has increased even further with the entrance of the rivals like Tesla Inc. and Rivian Automotive Inc. among others.
