O2 partners with Ericsson to expand its 5G network across the UK
- O2 has decided to partner with Ericsson to further develop 5G networks in various towns and cities across the UK as the company looks to build a standalone 5G network.
- This expansion in 5G technology will play a big part in the economic recovery across the region.
O2 has selected Ericsson to expand its 5G radio network further across the UK as a part of modernizing the existing 2G/3G/4G network program. O2 launched its 5G network in October last year. This partnership between O2 and Ericsson in the West region of the UK will include service upgrades in hardware and software and will bring superior data and voice capacity and better data coverage.
Brendan O’Reilly, Chief Technical Officer at O2 expressed his satisfaction on appointing Ericsson as one of its primary vendors to develop its 5G network. He said that the company will look to bring enhanced 5G telecommunication capabilities to customers through this association.
To have scope for this 5G network to develop even further in the future, solutions from the portfolio of Ericsson Radio Systems like wide-band and multi-band 5G radios will be deployed along with optimized 5G basebands. O2 is now looking to build a standalone 5G architecture to test and evaluate future mobile technology and systems solely supported by 5G by developing an innovation cluster as a part of its partnership with Ericsson.

Ericsson will have an important role to play in O2’s expansion plans to other cities and towns across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to bring increased connectivity and mobile broadband services to millions across the UK.
Arun Bansal, President for the region of Europe and Latin America, Ericsson stated that he was committed to developing the 5G technology because of its ability to play a crucial role in economic recovery across the UK. He also said that enterprises and society will benefit from the high gigabyte connectivity and that they are delighted to continue their long-term partnership with O2.
Mr. Bansal further went on to say that Ericsson focused on building high connectivity and capacity through its network is proud to expand its 5G capabilities being at the forefront of network modernization in the UK.
