Skoda planning for EV launch in India as it eyes long-term returns

The electric vehicle market has witnessed unprecedented growth across the globe; however, it is still at a relatively nascent stage in India. Czech automaker Skoda is reportedly planning to launch EVs in the country as it anticipates green mobility to gain traction over the next few years.

Skoda Auto India Brand Director Zac Hollis, on that matter, pressed that the company will have to get into the EV segment as they plan a long-term future in India. He added that they estimate 25-30% of the automobile market would be electric cars and the company needs to ensure that they play a part by bringing EVs to this market.

Hollis further pointed out that Audi and Porsche have already started to launch high-end EVs in India and these launches will help Skoda to assess how the technology fares in Indian road conditions, climate, and learn how dealership networks work in the country.

It is worth noting that declining diesel car sales and rising fuel prices have compelled many domestic carmakers to focus on lineups that leverage the more economical and lower-carbon emitting CNG as the power source. However, Hollis stated that they have no short-term plans for CNG as they cannot remain competitive because of their platform, technology, and TSI engines.

Notably, the Volkswagen-owned company sells models like Superb, Slavia, Kushaq, Kodiaq, and Octavia in India. The carmaker is witnessing a domestic turnaround, with sales close to 24,000 units in 2021. It also expanded its sales network from 65 to 153 to date and anticipates reaching 180 before the end of this year, cited credible sources.

Skoda’s progress can be linked to spearheading Volkswagen’s India 2.0 project that aimed to invest 1 billion euros between 2019 and 2021 as part of the group’s strategy to enhance its presence in India.
